A little preparation can help when your cat’s routine changes. Here are some useful things to know before boarding or grooming.

Leave the carrier open in a familiar part of your home well before the trip. Add familiar bedding and use rewards to build positive associations. Let your cat approach and enter at their own pace, then build up the practice gradually.

Familiar scents can help a cat feel more secure in a new setting. Their usual bedding or blanket may be useful. Check with The Meow first about which items are allowed and any cleaning requirements.

Hiding can help cats cope with unfamiliar surroundings. Offer a safe hiding place, a quiet setting and the choice to approach people on their own. Avoid pulling them out to interact. If their behaviour changes unusually, ask a veterinarian for advice.

Avoid sudden food changes. If a change is needed, make it gradually. Tell the carer about your cat’s usual food, portions and feeding routine. Ask The Meow whether you can bring your own food; follow your veterinarian’s instructions for a special diet.

It depends on coat length, age and how well your cat can groom themselves. Long-haired cats generally need more frequent brushing. Watch for tangles and changes in grooming habits. If your cat suddenly grooms less or excessively, speak to a veterinarian.

Start with short sessions and introduce the brush gradually. Keep restraint to a minimum, watch their body language and stop if they become tense. Mention any difficult past grooming experiences before an appointment so your cat’s needs can be discussed.

Living together does not always mean both cats are comfortable sharing every space. Consider their relationship, opportunities to retreat, and access to food, water and litter trays. Explain their usual behaviour and check the room arrangements with The Meow before boarding.

Do not assume it is stress or fussiness. Loss of appetite can be linked to a health problem. If your cat is not eating, contact a veterinarian promptly to decide what to do. Do not wait for 24 hours to pass or force food into their mouth.
